Bra buying spree leaves journalist confused

After posting yesterday’s item about the importance of wearing the right size bra, we found this item:

Journalist Ruth Addicott ventured into the world of cup size and cleavage after hearing endless tales of woe from women who can’t find a bra that fits.

But she was told by the experts that she was a 34B or C, a 36AA, and a 32C, D or DD !

Ruth, who is editor of the Brighton Argus’s Woman supplement, had thought she was a 32B – but says she still doesn’t know her correct size.

The 32-year-old journalist says she was left “confused and frustrated” after being fitted for a bra at six different shops while researching for a feature in the paper.

Nearly 80 per cent of women in Britain are thought to be wearing the wrong size, and so Ruth took advantage of the free fitting services at Marks & Spencer, BHS, Debenhams, Bravissimo, Contessa and a local lingerie boutique to put them to the test.

But in the final three shops she found seven bras to fit – albeit in different sizes.

She said: “My bra trek has left me confused, frustrated and £88 lighter.

“On the plus side, I have acquired seven bras and a cleavage, yet I still don’t know my true size.”

Does Ruth’s story sound familiar to you? If so, let again point you to the Bare Necessities Bra Fitting guide, as well as to the common sense tips in our previous item.

Bare Necessities

One of the shops where Ruth did find bras that fit properly was Bravissimo. In it’s online store, Bravissimo offers the following bra fitting advice:

There’s a lot of mythology out there when it comes to the subject of bra fitting. Most of us are led to believe that we must go and visit a lady in her twilight years (remember Mrs Slocombe from Are You Being Served?!) who will come at us with a measuring tape and tell us off for not wearing the right size. At Bravissimo, we don’t use tape measures because we don’t believe that they work. Instead, we prefer to show you what a good fitting bra looks and feels like, so you will be able to tell in a matter of seconds whether you’ve got a good fit.

A helpful comparison
We think it’s useful to compare buying a bra with buying a pair of shoes. Just as our feet vary in terms of size and shape, our boobs differ in terms of volume, shape and spacing. You might know your shoe size but it is very unlikely that you would buy a pair of shoes without trying them on first. The same goes for bras – one style of bra may be perfect for one woman and totally wrong for another, even though they are the same size. Added to this, bras tend to vary in size according to manufacturer and style, so you really need to try every bra on before you decide to keep it.

Our boobs change for all sorts of reasons over our lives (age, weight variations, pregnancy, and use of the contraceptive pill) and you may not be the same size for longer than a few months, let alone a lifetime! So, if you want to look and feel as good as you deserve to, you should look at your bras regularly and use our three step check to ensure you’ve got the perfect fit.
