Trendy-Lingerie.com — The Brazil congress has recently passed a law that would require sexual health messages to be placed in underwear manufactured and sold in the country.
Someone came up with the idea 12 years ago, and the lawmakers have no doubt done lots of hands-on research since then.
Now the bill is on the desk of President Dilma Rousseff, awaiting his approval.
Bras would carry tags encouraging women to examine their breasts in an effort to detect early signs of cancer.
Men forty years and older would find their underwear advising them to get screened for prostate cancer, while women’s underwear would tell them to use condoms in order to prevent cervical cancer.
Brazil’s lingerie manufacturers are not amused. They say adding a message to existing labels is not that big a problem, but if they have to add a second label the cost for consumers will grow.
The bill’s detractors point out the obvious: people generally don’t read the labels in their clothes. In fact, many consumers simply cut labels out of their new clothes the minute they get home.
Brazil’s constitution guarantees its citizens the right to health. Healthcare for legal residents is subsidized by the government, which is one reason why lawmakers are interested in placing an emphasis on prevention.
However, Maria Teresa Pugliesi, legal director of SindiVestuário — the union of the Brazilian clothing industry — says it’s absurd to try and make a connection between underwear and disease.
Incidentally, Brazil’s apparel industry is the sixth largest in the world. Its lingerie sector manufactures more than 735 million pieces a year.
