U.S. bra manufacturers report higher demand for larger-size bras

Trendy-Lingerie.com — Following a trend that has already seen the average breast size of British, Australian and Dutch women steadily increase, now breasts are getting bigger in the U.S. as well.

In the ’70s and ’80s the average bra size for women in America was 34B.

Then years ago, the median bra size had increased to 36C.

Currently lingerie manufacturers and retailers report a growing demand for DD, DDD and G cups.

More and more bra makers are also providing K and KK cup bras as well.

Why are breasts getting bigger?

Lingerie designers and other foundation industry experts cite a number of reasons behind the demand for bigger bras.

The trend can only be partially explained by an increase in the number of women who are obese, they say.

At a recent industry event several corset designers and bra fitters we spoke with reported they see a growing number of slim women with relatively large breasts.

Some experts suggest breasts are getting bigger due to hormones in our food.

Dutch bra maker Anneke van Keuterwalen, who designs and hand-fashions custom bras for an exclusive circle of clients, says she believes our modern lifestyle in which women have more leeway in how they dress also contributes to the increase in average breast sizes.

“Here in Holland breasts have been growing in size ever since the sixties,” she says. “Before then most women went to great length to ‘bind up’ and hide their breasts due to the then prevailing Calvinistic moral climate.”

“Almost as soon as women took charge of their own bodies, allowing ourselves the freedom to wear comfortable bras — or even go bra-less — breasts started increasing in size,” she claims.

Oprah’s bra advice

Many lingerie professionals point to what one expert calls ‘The Oprah Factor.’

“Once Oprah started talking about bras and their proper fit on her show women began realizing that most of them were wearing the wrong size bras,” says Michael Frankenhoef, a buyer for a Virtue Lingerie.

“Today women are better educated when it comes to the proper fit of a bra,” he says, adding that he thinks the growing demand for large bras “isn’t necessarily driven by a large-scale increase in the average breast size, but rather by the fact that women are finally learning their correct bra sizes.”
